GONZALO MARTINEZ
Artist NMJ
Within one of the most popular and rhythmic neighborhoods in Caracas, “San Agustín,” Gonzalo De Jesús Martínez was born on September 23rd, the youngest of twelve siblings. From a young age, he was always surrounded by music. His first admiration was for his mother, whom he would listen to sing the songs playing on the radio. Gradually, his musical passion grew, and he began his training at the San Agustín Cultural Workshop (TACUSAN). Later, he attended the José Ángel Lamas Music School, where he took his first steps in theory and solfeggio, eventually joining the San Agustín nucleus of the Youth Symphony Orchestra.
His professional beginnings came with Mr. Jesús Blanco, who invited him to participate in a project called "Son Marín." Here, he shared performances with his brother Pablo, who also composed several songs for both projects, which were recorded in the 1980s. The first was produced by Mauricio Silva, and this is where Gonzalo formed a friendship with this extraordinary musician. The second "Son Marín" work was produced by Joel Uriola and Héctor Velázquez.
In the late 1980s, Gonzalo began a new phase in his career, becoming a backing vocalist in the newly formed Marianella orchestra, as well as with Silva and Guerra. He started being requested for numerous productions to record background vocals. However, a new opportunity to record came after the dissolution of Silva and Guerra, and Gonzalo joined Manuel Guerra’s project as a lead vocalist.
With Manuel Guerra, he recorded two productions: “Sólo Guerra” in 1992 and “Mas Guerra” in 1993, where he popularized songs such as “Cómo puedo vivir sin tu amor,” “Cuando estés con él,” “Un amor que termina así,” and “El hombre que soy.” During this time, there were many performances by Manuel Guerra's group, but the project eventually ended, and Gonzalo had to open new paths. He decided to travel to New York, where his career as a backing vocalist was well recognized. He was immediately invited by India to be a part of her orchestra. During this time, he alternated with great salsa figures and developed a strong desire to present his own solo work.
His high level of skill led him to collaborate with many great figures, including Celia Cruz, Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Cheo Feliciano, Domingo Quiñones, Adalberto Santiago, Luisito Carrión, Saxomanía, Franco De Vita, Maelo Ruiz, Willie González, Carlos Baute, Henry Fiol, Alex D’Castro, Eddie Santiago, Watusi, Servando y Florentino, Sergio Pérez, Irving Manuel, El Pollo Brito, and many more. The list of his collaborations is endless, in addition to the jingle recordings he made throughout the 1990s and his participation in the most traditional orchestra in Venezuela, "La Billos." At the end of the decade, he was invited to participate in a project called "El Klan De Joseito," where his voice can be heard on the song “Ya No Te Escondas Más,” which also gave the album its title.
As the new millennium began, Gonzalo focused on creating his first musical work. Despite his multiple commitments and his dedicated career as a backing vocalist, he gathered songs for his project. Among the selected tracks were compositions by his brother Pablo Martínez and his godfather Cheo Linares. The arrangements were made by maestro Louis García, Joel Uriola, and Irving Manuel. The album captures his experiences in the salsa genre, with themes of love, the streets, feelings, and life stories, all united by a purpose, a promise, a dream he had waited for in silence and is now presented with respect to his audience.
As the chorus says, “Rhythm, drum, a mambo, and with my singing for the dance,” Gonzalo Martínez brings us “Mi Promesa,” the title track of the album, expressing everything this experienced performer feels. “Amor De Verdad,” one of the romantic tracks on the album, as well as the hit “Te Estoy Queriendo Tanto,” popularized by the Spanish singer Raphael. He also recorded two versions of songs that have been dear to him throughout his career: “A Donde Quiera,” which Orlando Watusi recorded in the 1980s, and “Nací Para Quererte” by Carlos Baute. He also did an arrangement of the bolero “Señora Tristeza” by maestro Louis García, adding some spice with tracks like “Donde Están,” “Así Es La Vida,” and “Disculpe Usted.” To conclude this extraordinary work, he created a medley of the hits he recorded with Manuel Guerra. Ten selections that invite us to enjoy one of the hottest and most contagious genres in the world, “Salsa.”
